The US Mint first issued the silver American Eagle more than 30 years ago. By 2017, the coin was well established as the most popular silver bullion coin ever produced by a sovereign mint. Money Metals Exchange is proud to present 2017 date coins. They are the perfect combination of trust, beauty and affordable premium.
Weighing in at 1 Troy ounce each, each 2017 Silver Eagle coin is 99.9% pure silver. Coins are stamped with this weight and purity, along with the markings typical of US coinage. Each coin is 40mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
The 2017 Silver Eagle has the face value of $1 and is a US legal-tender coin. The coin was authorized by the United States Mint by Title II of public law 99-96. Production began in 1996.
Each silver coin is guaranteed by the US Mint for its weight and purity. 2017 Silver Eagles are eligible to be held in an Individual Retirement Account or precious metals IRAs.
2017 Silver Eagles stand out because of the beautiful design. The patriotic imagery designed by Sculptor-Engraver, Adolph A. Weinman, celebrates Liberty incarnated in the form of Lady Liberty striding along her path – often referred to as the “Walking Liberty” design. She is found on the obverse side, draped in the Stars and Stripes and carrying branches of laurel and oak, as she walks toward the shining sun.
The 2017 Eagle’s reverse side, showcases the heraldic American Eagle. Designed by the US Mint Sculptor-Engraver, John Mercanti, the design features the striking eagle clutching an olive branch in the right talon and a bundle of arrows in the left.
Silver was once a cornerstone of the American economy and commerce. Before the fledgling US government began issuing its own silver dollars for use as currency, Spanish silver coins were widely used to buy goods and services. Silver was, and remains, honest and incorruptible money.
Gold may get much of the attention as the more valuable of the two precious metals, but serious metals investors know silver’s worth. It is both a key monetary metal and inflation hedge, as well as an invaluable industrial metal useful in many applications.
Since the release of the first American Silver Eagle in 1986, the popularity of the coin has grown by leaps and bounds. In fact, the coins immediately sold out not long after their introduction. In 2015, 47 million coins were minted and sold. That sales record stands for now, but likely won’t hold up during the next wave of interest in metals.
Many people hold the silver American eagle in their metal investment portfolio. No coin has been chosen more often as protection against the devaluing US dollar and against volatility in the conventional (paper) financial markets.
Although the face value of the 2017 Silver Eagle is only $1, the actual value of the coin is based on the much higher price for silver. In fact, because of the coin’s popularity, the American Eagle nearly always commands a premium when it is time to sell.
