Voyageurs National Park is located in Northern Minnesota on the Kabetogam Peninsula, along the border with Canada. More than 40% of the park is comprised of water - a maze of lakes and waterways. It is named for the fur traders - or voyageurs - who explored the area in centuries past. The fur trade, like the clothing made from it, has all but disappeared. But 250 years ago that industry was a driving force for the exploration and development of what was then considered to be the "great northwest".
Voyageurs Park was established in 1975 and preserves the history of the fur trade in the region along with the much longer history of Native Americans who populated the region. According to archaeologists, man has inhabited the park's lands for more than 10,000 years. It joins many other national historical parks, for the America the Beautiful coin series, do to its history and beauty known to everyone.
Visitors can tour some of the historic park by car, but to really appreciate all the park has to offer a boat, canoe or kayak is recommended. The Park Service also has boat tours available. Much of the Park can only be accessed by water, just like the trappers and Native Americans before them.
The coin's reverse features a common loon paddling a waterway with rocky cliffs in the background. Inscribed on the reverse are the words; Voyageurs, Minnesota, 2018, and E Pluribus Unum.
The obverse carries the familiar coin portrait of George Washington - the portrait featured on current Washington quarters. The inscriptions on this side include; United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust and Quarter Dollar.
The coins are packaged by the US Mint in tubes of 10 coins. A full Mint box contains 10 tubes for a total of 500 ounces. The weight and purity (.999 Fine Silver, 5.0 Ounce) of the coin inscribed on the coin's rim and is guaranteed by the US government.
A silver coin is always a great idea to invest in physical silver. Why not get some beauty, history and something to start conversations with to go along with your ounces? Each new release in the America the Beautiful series tends to go quickly. Many of the coins, from this coin series, now command significant premiums in the secondary market. Don't delay - get yours while they are available.
