There are two main ways to invest in precious metals short of actually owning a mine. You can trade in them on your own by buying bullion coins and bars, or you can purchase certificates or invest in a mutual fund and rely on the manager to make you money.
One downside of dealing with precious metal bullions is that you obviously need a secure storage space and you have to deal with making enough money after paying the premium. However, there’s one thing worth noting here.
The more bars or coins that you buy at one time the lower the premium, so always keep that in mind if you’re looking to make serious money from your precious metal portfolio.
Because gold is such a hot commodity, gold bars and gold coins are almost equally popular. But, how does the 50 gram gold bar actually fare against other bullion alternatives? Find out in the following paragraphs.
The 50 gram gold bar is the middle ground between 1 oz. and 5 oz. gold bars. Because of the slightly higher value over 1 oz. bars, 50 gram gold bars remain a decent investment opportunity for casual and new investors who don’t have a large capital.
Obviously, the 50 gram gold bar allows you to save and make money by investing in the most popular precious metal. If you’re ready to move up from silver trading, gold is usually the most logical next step.
Although platinum and palladium have lower values and require lower initial investment at the moment, this is not always the case. The popularity of gold has jacked up its price and bullion variety. There’s plenty of it to go around so it will be easy to obtain a high quality 50 gram gold bar or a tube of gold coins.
The premiums on these gold bars are also quite low. This makes perfect sense in light of the manufacturing process. The production cost per unit of weight is cheaper for larger bars of gold, and even more so compared to coins.
Therefore, larger products such as the 50 gram gold bar will usually have a lower premium than gold coins of the same weight. However, there are exceptions depending on the quality of the design and the production mint.
Another interesting fact that should factor into your decision is storage space. If you’re serious about investing and eventually trading in gold, buying coins is no longer an option. Gold bars allow you to store more money per square inch in your safe or vault.
However, the 50 gram gold bar is still an entry-level investment opportunity. If you’re looking to make the big bucks you’ll have to eventually move on to larger bars or ingots in order to reduce the premium and earn more money in a single trade.
PAMP Suisse and Republic Metals both strike entry-level 50 gram gold bars for investors. In terms of aesthetics, these are not the most polished. They have a few rough edges and some unevenness to them, but the detailing of the stamp is quite clear, especially for the weight and purity rating stamped in the middle of the bars.
While these may not be the most visually impressive gold bars on the market, the .9999 fine purity should be all that matters for investors. Therefore, it’s easy to trade in 50 gram gold bars since there’s a high demand and enough supply.
The 50 gram gold bar is also a collector’s item. Because most of these bars have low premiums, they make good additions to personal collections.
Gold bars come in a wide range of sizes, so if you’re looking to have a bit of everything you simply can’t skip getting a 50 gram gold bar.
Although this design is not the most impressive, the low premium may still be attractive to some collectors. This is especially the case if you’re buying them as a hedge against riskier investments or as a way to park your money.
In fact, some collectors may even prefer the Republic gold bar for its more rugged authentic look which a lot of people find appealing.
There are a number of mints, private and government, which produce 50 gram gold bars. Perhaps the most popular are the Perth Mint, Emirates Gold, Baird & Co., PAMP, and Valcambi, but there are others besides.
What’s interesting is that the Royal Mint hasn’t struck a 50 gram gold bar ever, not even as a commemorative piece.
Different mints may demand different premiums, so it’s important to know why you want the bar. If you’re a collector, you may buy whichever that strikes your fancy. But if you want to be an investor, forget about the aesthetics and purchase in bulk at lower premiums.
The Baird & Co and PAMP Suisse gold bars probably come with the lowest premiums. On the other end of the spectrum, Valcambi has some of the most expensive 50 gram gold bars on the market.
Another thing to consider is the supplier. Dealing with trusted vendors is essential for both investors and collectors. Trusted vendors can guarantee mint condition gold bars with proper packaging.
They can also secure gold bullion coins and bars at lower premiums, which is what investors should always look for.
While this Republic Metals Corporation 50 gram gold bar may not be the most eye-catching, it is a solid investment opportunity. It is .9999 pure and comes with a rather low premium.
It’s easy to store and even easier to sell, not the least because it is rather well-known that most other 50 gram gold bars on the market tend to carry considerably higher premiums, both at the initial purchase and reseller levels.
And as always, remember this: Buying in bulk helps you save money by reducing the premium on the individual pieces.
