Reverse: The reverse showcases a powerful image of an American eagle in flight, soaring above a rising sun with radiant rays stretching outward. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS are placed at the top of the design. In God We Trust is above the sun since 1908.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was not included on the original 1907 design, at the specific direction of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt believed that placing the name of God on coins, which could be used for trivial or even immoral purposes, was irreverent. However, this omission caused a public outcry-many Americans considered the motto essential. As a result of this pressure, Congress passed legislation in 1908 requiring the motto's inclusion. Starting later that year, IN GOD WE TRUST was added below the eagle on the reverse side of the coin.
