Among America’s most beautiful and iconic gold coins, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle holds a special place in the hearts of both collectors and investors.
Originally minted from 1907 to 1933, this $20 gold coin was designed by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who sought to elevate U.S. coinage to the level of ancient Greek artistry. The intricate design has made it a favorite in the numismatic community, where its rarity and historical significance contribute to its high market value.
Today, these historic gold coins are prized not only for their gold content but for their stunning design and enduring appeal. Collectors often trade these coins, and their bullion value is complemented by their numismatic importance.
These coins were minted by the United States Mint (U.S. Mint) at the following locations:
- Philadelphia Mint
- Denver Mint
- San Francisco Mint
Other specs include:
- Diameter: 34 mm
- Edge: E Pluribus Unum with words divided by stars (most versions)
- Weight: 33.436 grams
- Net Weight: .96750 troy ounces of pure gold
- Composition: 90% gold, .10% copper
Design
Obverse: The obverse (front) of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle features a full-length image of Lady Liberty striding confidently forward. In her right hand, she holds a torch symbolizing enlightenment; in her left, an olive branch representing peace. The U.S. Capitol building can be seen in the background to the lower left. Behind Liberty, bold sun rays radiate outward, enhancing the sense of forward motion and optimism. The word LIBERTY arches across the top edge, and a circle of stars representing the states surrounds the rim (initially 46 stars, increased to 48 in 1912 after New Mexico and Arizona achieved statehood). The date of issue appears to the right of Liberty's foot.
Reverse: The reverse showcases a powerful image of an American eagle in flight, soaring above a rising sun with radiant rays stretching outward. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS are placed at the top of the design. In God We Trust is above the sun since 1908.
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was not included on the original 1907 design, at the specific direction of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt believed that placing the name of God on coins, which could be used for trivial or even immoral purposes, was irreverent. However, this omission caused a public outcry-many Americans considered the motto essential. As a result of this pressure, Congress passed legislation in 1908 requiring the motto's inclusion. Starting later that year, IN GOD WE TRUST was added below the eagle on the reverse side of the coin.
