Who Was Wilhelm II?
Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia, ruling from 1888 to 1918. As the grandson of Queen Victoria, he was connected to many of Europe's royal families.
A complex and controversial figure, Wilhelm II played a key role in shaping Germany’s policies leading up to World War I. He was known for his militaristic ambitions, aggressive foreign policy, and strained diplomatic relations with other European powers. His reign saw the expansion of the German Empire’s navy and industrial power, but also increasing tensions that contributed to the outbreak of the war.
In 1918, following Germany’s defeat in World War I, Wilhelm II abdicated and went into exile in the Netherlands, where he remained until his death in 1941.
Despite his downfall, coins bearing his image remain highly collectible, offering a glimpse into the final years of the German Empire before its transition into the Weimar Republic.
