Design Features
-
Obverse: Depicts Lady Liberty wearing a coronet with the word Liberty and with her hair in a bun. There are 13 stars around her symbolizing the original 13 colonies. The design varies slightly over the years (Variety 1 and 2).
-
Reverse: Features a bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing peace and strength. The words on the reverse side include "United States of America," and, "Five D" (which stands for "Five Dollars" or $5 USD). The design varies slightly over the years, including the font and date sizes, and more (Variety 1 and 2).
-
Variety 1 (1839-1866): Does not include the motto "In God We Trust."
-
Variety 2 (1866-1908): Includes the motto in a banner above the eagle.
-
The placement of the mintmark changed over the years. In 1839, it was located above the year on the obverse side. From 1840-1908, the mintmark appeared below the eagle on the reverse side.
