- Variety 2 (With Motto, 1908-1933): This version includes the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the eagle. The addition of the motto was reinstated in 1908 after an act of Congress.
Historical Context:
The United States Mint $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle coins were minted between 1907 and 1933 at the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, and San Francisco Mint locations. The U.S. Mint design was created under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt, who initially objected to including the motto “In God We Trust” on the coin, citing religious reasons. The motto was added back by Congressional mandate in 1908.
The obverse design of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress and the eagle on the reverse are both testaments to the artistic renaissance in American coinage during the early 20th century, influenced by President Roosevelt's vision.
Edge Design:
- From 1907 to 1911, the coins had 46 raised stars on the edge, representing the states in the Union.
- From 1912 to 1933, the edge featured 48 raised stars after the admission of Arizona and New Mexico as states.
- There are also plain edge varieties from 1907.
Random Selection:
The coins available for purchase are selected randomly from limited inventory. The mint, mintmark (mint mark), year, and variety (with or without the motto) are chosen at random.
