South African Big Five Elephant in Stunning .9999 Gold
The Rand Refinery, South Africa's sovereign Mint, and makers of the iconic Krugerrand, have a new offering in the Big Five Series. The series was planned and approved in 2019, but the first release is only available now, with a 2022 date on each coin. The Big Five is destined to become a favorite with collectors and investors.

The Big Five was created by the South African Mint to celebrate the diversity of African wildlife. The collection is planned for of five distinct coins; the Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant, and Cape Buffalo. These magnificent animals were legally hunted in times past, and successfully hunting the "Big 5" was among the greatest achievements for avid hunters. Today these species are revered and protected and the coins are a tribute to these magnificent animals.
The animals have also been intrinsically linked to South African currency since 1988 when they were first used on the South African banknote range.
The obverse of the 2022 1-oz Gold South African Big Five Elephant Coin, carries the iconic image of the elephant as well as the South African coat of arms. The elephant is featured in a full frontal view with its large trunk and intimidating tusks. South Africa’s coat of arms is found at the center of the image.
The reverse of the coin displays the heads of two elephants in side by side view. You will also find an inscription in the center of the image with the coin's weight, purity, and denomination.
The coin is the first in the Big Five Series.
