U.S. Silver Certificate Collection - 2 x $1 USD Notes, 1935 and 1957
Silver certificates were a form of representative paper currency issued by the U.S. government between 1878 and 1964. These notes were once redeemable for their face value in silver coinage or bullion, meaning holders could exchange them for actual silver from the U.S. Treasury.
This silver redeemability made them a form of sound money, as opposed to unbacked fiat currency such as Federal Reserve Notes that we have today. Silver certificates were no longer redeemable for silver as of June 24, 1968.
Initially introduced as a way to facilitate the use of silver as money, silver certificates remained in circulation even after silver redemption ended in 1968, transitioning into standard legal tender.
This collection includes two $1 Silver Certificates from 1935 and 1957, reflecting a pivotal era in American monetary history. Today, they serve as valuable and nostalgic collector's items, offering a tangible connection to a time when U.S. currency was directly backed by precious metal reserves.
