The iconic Statue of Liberty has been standing on Liberty Island in the New York City harbor since its dedication on Oct. 28, 1886. It was a joint project between the French and American citizens who shared the costs of construction. The statue, one of the modern wonders of the world, was built in pieces in France and then sent by ship to New York.
The french name for the statue translates to "Liberty Enlightening the World." It depicts the Roman goddess Libertas holding a burning torch in her right hand, raised above her head. The left hand of Libertas holds a tabula ansata with the inscription "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" -- July 4, 1776.
Libertas is taking a step forward, a broken shackle and chain lie useless at her feet. The broken restraint symbolizes the abolition of slavery.
