Design and Symbolism
Designed by the British-born engraver George T. Morgan, the Morgan Dollar features a distinct and captivating design.
The obverse depicts a profile of Lady Liberty, wearing a crown adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing America's agricultural heritage. The crown sits on her Phrygian Cap which stands for liberty and freedom. The word "Liberty" arcs her crown, while thirteen stars on the sides of the coin design represent the original colonies. Above her head are the words E PLURIBUS UNUM, and below her is the year.
The reverse side of the coin showcases an American bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing peace and preparedness for defense. A laurel wreath is below the American eagle. Around the reverse side of the coin are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and ONE DOLLAR. Above the eagle is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
Historical Context
The production of the Morgan Dollar was spurred by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which mandated the minting of millions of silver dollars to alleviate the silver surplus resulting from the discovery of vast silver deposits in the West. The Morgan Dollar played a crucial role in facilitating commerce and trade during the late 19th century, circulating widely across the United States.
In 1918, the Pittman Act mandated the melting of 270,232,722 silver dollars.
In 1921, the U.S. Mint began producing the Morgan silver dollars once again, but quickly changed the design that same year to form the Peace Dollar (1921-1935, 2021+).
