The fearsome sabre-tooth is the the most famous Ice Age predator. If you were a young mammoth or mastodon, the last thing you’d want to see is is Smilodon fatalis suddenly lunging at you, flashing its oversized fangs!
“Smilodon" means scalpel tooth, a fitting descriptor for the giant cat whose deadly canines measured up to 18 centimetres long. As a top predator, the sabre toothed cat stalked large herbivores; horses, camels, giant ground sloths and more by hiding and pouncing on them, much like today’s big cats.
Despite being synonymous with the Ice Age, you won’t find Smilodon perched atop a glacier. The prehistoric cats preferred warmer climates. Its fossils are among the most common found in the tar pit deposits of California, but its range extended across ice free areas of North, Central and South America.
A 35,000 - 40,000 year old bone, found in 2019, became the first verified evidence the Smilodon fatalis existed in the prehistoric plains of southern Alberta, before becoming extinct at the end of the Pleistocene epoch, around 11,700 years ago.
The coins obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies which have graced Canadian coins and the double date marking the beginning and end of her reign
The reverse features the mighty Sabre-Tooth lunging off of the coin toward the viewer, with claws extended.
The Sabre-Tooth coin carries a 2023 date and is denominated at $10 CAD. Each is marked with its weight and purity; 2 troy ozs .9999 fine silver.
In addition to the striking design that will appeal to any bullion investor looking for something extra special, the Sabre-Tooth coin also incorporates renowned Mint security features, including the maple leaf lasermark and precise radial lines around the border. And at a full two ounces, the coin is thicker than a standard one- ounce bullion coin, giving it an especially satisfying heft.
New issues in the Ice Age of Canada series will be forthcoming, so investors should keep a watchful eye out to see which beast is released next!
